Jerusalem, 5 November, 2018 (TPS-IL) -- Israeli President Reuven ‘Ruvi’ Rivlin, along with Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked announced Monday, that young Ethiopian-Israelis with a criminal record may submit requests for amnesty ahead of the Ethiopian-Jewish Sigd holiday, which marks the renweal of the covenant between God and the People of Israel, and takes place Wednesday, 50 days after Yom Kippur.

The offer is relevant for individuals who have been charged with disturbing the peace but have received no jail time, most likely pertaining to those arrested during the demonstrations in May 2015, in which thousands of Ethiopian-Israelis took to the streets to protest racial discrimination against them by the Israeli authorities. Around 35 policemen and 11 civilians were injured in the protests.
