Sussita (Hippos) National Park on a hill on the slopes of the Golan Heights east of the Sea of Galilee preserves magnificent remains of the ancient city of Hippos (“horse” in Greek) from the Hellenistic and the Roman–Byzantine periods until it was destroyed by a major earthquake in 749 CE.
