Hamas, Islamic Jihad Fire 70 Rockets And Mortars At Israel
Some 70 rockets and mortars were fired at Israeli communities by Palestinian factions in Gaza as of 8 p.m. Tuesday, including rockets of Iranian origin, a military spokesman said.
The day began with a barrage of over 20 rockets at around 7 a.m at communities along the Gaza Belt area, with a mortar hitting the courtyard of a nursery school in Kibbutz Ein Hashlosha in the western Negev.
Later in the day shrapnel damaged buildings and cars in the town of Sderot and three people were injured by shrapnel in the Eshkol Regional Council.
Sirens sounded throughout the day as far away from the Gaza border as Ashkelon, with the longest range rockets aimed at Ofakim, some 20 kilometers west of Beer Sheva.
Security officials instructed residents of communities in the Gaza Belt to stay within range of bomb shelters for the first time since the 2014 war.
The Iron Dome defense system intercepted dozens of mortars and rockets.
The IDF hit dozens of Hamas and Islamic Jihad targets in the widest ranging strikes on the Gaza Strip since Operation Protective Edge in 2014 and jets demolished a Hamas attack tunnel that crossed into the Sinai Peninsula before doubling back toward Israel near the Kerem Shalom crossing.
