Jerusalem, 12 August, 2025 (TPS-IL) -- (AZERTAC) – An earthquake was recorded in the Caspian Sea on Tuesday, coinciding with Caspian Sea Day.

According to the information provided to AZERTAC by the Republican Seismological Service Center , the magnitude of the earthquake recorded at 11:16 local time was 3.2.

The earthquake’s epicenter was located at a depth of 74 kilometers.

Caspian Sea Day was established by Azerbaijan, Iran, Russia, Turkmenistan, and Kazakhstan in 2006. These five littoral states signed the Framework Convention for the Protection of the Ecological Environment of the Caspian Sea, also known as the Tehran Convention, pledging to protect the world’s largest enclosed water body. August 12 marks the anniversary of the convention’s ratification by the five member-countries.

Over the past 30 years, climate change has made the Caspian Sea basin more vulnerable to climate change. As a result, the population living along the Caspian Sea coast has become more exposed to the negative effects of severe climate change, sea level fluctuations, floods and droughts. The lowering of the Caspian Sea level due to climate change has become a potential threat to the region. The decrease in river water flowing into the sea is explained not only by the decrease in precipitation, but also by the diversion of river water to meet the growing demand for agriculture.
