Parliament Unanimously Re-Elects Kiril Valchev to Lead Bulgarian Telegraphic Agency
Jerusalem, 4 December, 2025 (TPS-IL) -- Sofia (BTA) – Unanimously, with 170 votes in favor, Bulgaria’s parliament elected Kiril Valchev for a second five-year term as Director General of the Bulgarian Telegraph Agency (BTA). There were no votes against or abstentions.
Fifty-three MPs from the GERB-SDF parliamentary group, 23 from “We Continue the Change-Democratic Bulgaria”, 28 from “Vazrazhdane”, 20 from “DPS-New Beginning”, 18 from “BSP-United Left”, 17 from “There is Such a People”, eight from “Alliance for Rights and Freedoms”, as well as three MPs not members of a parliamentary group voted in support.
Kiril Valchev’s candidacy was proposed by Kostadin Angelov (GERB-SDS), Toshko Yordanov (“There are such people”) and Mariana Boyadzhieva (“BSP-United Left”).
After Parliament Speaker Raya Nazaryan announced Valchev elected, he took an oath before the National Assembly to abide by the Constitution and laws of the country and to faithfully fulfill his duties as Director General of the Bulgarian Telegraph Agency, guided by the principles provided for in the BTA Law.
Raya Nazaryan wished him a successful term.
The National Assembly received more than 60 letters in support of Kiril Valchev’s candidacy, announced the Chairman of the Committee on Culture and Media, Toshko Yordanov, during the presentation of his nomination.
Kiril Alexandrov Valchev was born on May 24, 1973 in Sofia, the chairman of the media commission read. In 1992, he graduated with honors from the National High School for Ancient Languages and Cultures “Constantine Cyril the Philosopher”, and in 1998, he also graduated with honors from Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”, majoring in Law, Master’s degree. In 1995, he completed a professional course in radio management at Deutsche Welle in Cologne, Germany, was a fellow of the German Marshall Fund’s European Leadership Program in the USA in 2000, and in 2003, he was an intern at the Bulgarian section of the BBC in London, Great Britain.
He has language skills in English, Russian, Latin, Ancient Greek and Old Bulgarian.
In the period 1993-1995 he worked at BTA. From 1993 to 2021 he was the author of the weekly overview show “The Week” on Darik Radio. He covered a number of events as a radio correspondent.
Kiril Valchev was secretary of the Union of Bulgarian National Electronic Media, whose members are BTA, BNT, BNR, Nova Television and Darik Radio.
As a lawyer, Kiril Valchev has worked in the field of media and intellectual property. He is the author of publications in the field of constitutional and commercial law. He was a legal consultant to BTA, Darik Radio and other media. In 2011, he participated in the drafting of the BTA Act.
He is the recipient of numerous honors and awards in the field of media.
