Bulgaria and Romania Kick Off First Cross-Border Quantum Communications Link

Jerusalem, 19 March, 2026 (TPS-IL) -- Sofia (BTA) – The construction of the first cross-border quantum communication route between Bulgaria and Romania began with an official cermony in Sofia on Thurday.

The new route will connect Sofia and Bucharest and will become a key element of the future European quantum communications infrastructure. It is part of the broader European initiative to build a secure communications environment for state institutions, scientific organizations and strategic infrastructures in the European Union, the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) announced.

Organized by the IR and the QUAZAR Competence Center – the national coordinator of the Republic of Bulgaria for the construction of the European quantum communication infrastructure –the event took place at the Institute of Robotics at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.

The Academy said that the quantum corridor between Sofia and Bucharest will form a large-scale quantum communication network, uniting the national quantum networks of Greece, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Romania and the Netherlands.
