Israel Clears Last Mines Around Jordan Valley Churches

Israel has completed its project to clear the land-mine fields surrounding several churches in the Jordan Valley.

The last mines were cleared around the Romanian Church, in the vicinity of the Qasr al-Yahud Baptismal Site.

“The Land of the Monasteries” along the Jordan River was abandoned for 50 years after the Six-Day War, but a recent Israeli project cleared the area of land mines and made it accessible to pilgrims.

Some 750,000 tourists from around the world have visited the baptismal site and the ‘Land of the Monasteries’ in the past year, bringing significant economic benefit to the residents of the area.

IDF Captures Armed Infiltrator from Jordan

IDF forces on Tuesday night captured an Arab who infiltrated Israel from Jordan in the north of the Arava area.

He was armed with a knife.

The forces transferred him for questioning.

Netanyahu Appoints Ministers of Education, Transportation

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced Monday evening that he had appointed MK Rafi Peretz as minister of education, and MK Betsalel Smotrich as minister of transportation.

Both are members of the Union of Right-Wing Parties. Peretz is a former IAF helicopter pilot and the IDF’s Cheif Rabbi.

Smotrich was also admitted to the Security Cabinet. Peretz will set in at the meetings with an observer’s status.

Report: Israeli Unit, Gazans Exchange Fire

Israeli forces and Gazan terrorists engaged in a gun battle on Sunday night, reports from Gaza say.

No Israelis were injured in the incident.

The IDF has yet to make a statement on the incident.

The exact nature of the incident is unclear. Some reports say that the Israeli unit was Special Forces operating inside Gaza, while another report said that the troops were attacked while carrying maintenance operations on the border fence.

IAF Bombs Hamas targets in Response to Rocket Attack

Israel Air Force (IAF) fighters in Thursday night bombed several Hamas terror targets in response to a rocket attack early in the evening on Israel.

Gaza-based terrorists fired a rocket at the city of Sderot, directly hitting a Yeshiva in the city. No one was injured in the attack, but the building incurred damage.

The targets included terrorist infrastructures in military compounds and a Hamas naval base.

No injuries were reported in any of the strikes.
