Liberman on death penalty: ‘We won’t give up until the mission is accomplished’

Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman announced that his law proposal, demanding the death penalty for terrorists will be brought to discussion at the next meeting of the Constitution, Law and Justice Committee next Wednesday, and then be brought to a Knesset for a first reading vote.

“We will not give up until the mission is completed,” Liberman, whose been pushing for a death penalty for the past three years, tweeted about the measure.

 

 

Israeli PM Binyamin Netanyahu praises Trump’s decision to reinstate sanction on Iran

Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu praised US President Donald Trump on Monday for his decision to reinstate sanctions against Iran.

“This day is an historic day,” Netanyahu said, while addressing legislators from the Likud party. “I would like to again thank US President Donald Trump for the courageous, determined and important decision. I think this contributes to stability and security and peace.

“The decision supports stability security and peace,” he said. “This is a very big day for the State of Israel, the people of Israel and the future of Israel.”

Catholic Bishops call for Nation State Law to be repealed

A group of senior Catholic bishops has called on the government to repeal the Nation State Law as it provides “a constitutional and legal basis for discrimination among Israeli citizens.”

“Our faithful, Christians, our  fellow citizens Muslim, Druse and Baha’i, all of us who are no less citizens of this country than our Jewish brothers and sisters,” read the statement issued by the senior Catholic clerics, including Pierbattista Pizzaballa. Apostolic Administrator of Jerusalem and Francesco Patton, Custos of the Holy Land.

The clerics said the Nation State Law “provides a constitutional and legal basis for discrimination among Israeli citizens, clearly stating the principles by which Jewish citizens must be privileged over others.”

Rivlin offers amnesty to Ethiopian-Israelis ahead of Sigd holiday

Israeli President Reuven ‘Ruvi’ Rivlin, along with Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked announced Monday, that young Ethiopian-Israelis with a criminal record may submit requests for amnesty ahead of the Ethiopian-Jewish Sigd holiday, which marks the renweal of the covenant between God and the People of Israel, and takes place Wednesday, 50 days after Yom Kippur.

The offer is relevant for individuals who have been charged with disturbing the peace but have received no jail time, most likely pertaining to those arrested during the demonstrations in May 2015, in which thousands of Ethiopian-Israelis took to the streets to protest racial discrimination against them by the Israeli authorities. Around 35 policemen and 11 civilians were injured in the protests.

 

October sets all time monthly record for incoming tourism

October 2018 was the best month ever for incoming tourism with close to half a million people entering the country, injecting NIS 2.5 billion into the economy, the Ministry of Tourism and the Central Bureau of Statistics said in a joint release Monday. The figures were an increase of 14% from last year,

“ These excellent statistics have been recorded month after month for the last two years, and are a direct result of the intensive work we are doing at the Ministry of Tourism. “ said Tourism Minister Yariv Levin. “Incoming tourism contributes significantly to both Israel’s economy and – no less importantly – to its image. I am convinced that we will continue to see the sharp rise in the number of tourists arriving in Israel, and we will end the year with another record.

During the first ten months of  2018, some 3.4 million tourist entries have been recorded in Israel, an increase of about 15% compared to the same period last year.
