Dr. Philip H. Gordon, Senior Fellow, Council onForeign Relations

Dr. Philip Gordon is a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) in Washington, D.C. and a senior advisor at Albright Stonebridge Group. Prior to joining CFR, Gordon served on the National Security Council as special assistant to the president and White House Coordinator for the Middle East, North Africa, and the Gulf Region from 2013 to 2015. As the most senior White House official focused on the greater Middle East, he worked closely with the president, secretary of state, and national security advisor on issues including the Iranian nuclear program, Middle East peace negotiations, the conflicts in Syria and Iraq, U.S. relations with the Gulf states, transitions in North Africa, and bilateral relations with Israel, Egypt, Jordan, and Lebanon. From 2009 to 2013, Gordon served as assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian affairs and was responsible for fifty countries in Europe and Eurasia as well as for NATO, the European Union and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. He previously served as a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution and director for European Affairs at the National Security Council under President Bill Clinton. He is the author of numerous books and articles about Europe, the Middle East, and U.S. foreign policy, and writes regularly for publications such as the Washington Post, Financial Times, Politico, and Foreign Affairs.
