Israeli Airstrike Kills Islamic Jihad Rocket Commander
Jerusalem, 31 December, 2024 (TPS-IL) -- An Israeli airstrike killed a senior Palestinian Islamic Jihad commander in Gaza, the Israel Defense Forces said on Tuesday.
The IDF confirmed the death Saadi Masri, a commander of the northern Gaza region in the rocket unit of Islamic Jihad, who was killed in the beginning of December.
The army said Masri commanded the firing of rockets from northern Gaza into Israeli territory, including on during the October 7 attacks.
“Saadi Masri was a significant factor in carrying out many terrorist plots, managing and commanding the organization’s terrorist operations, which harmed citizens of the State of Israel and IDF soldiers,” the army said.
The IDF said it used precise munitions, aerial surveillance and other measures to mitigate collateral damage to civilians.
At least 1,200 people were killed, and 252 Israelis and foreigners were taken hostage in Hamas’s attacks on Israeli communities near the Gaza border on October 7. Of the 97 remaining hostages, more than 30 have been declared dead. Hamas has also been holding captive two Israeli civilians since 2014 and 2015, and the bodies of two soldiers killed in 2014.
