With Eye on Iran, Israeli Envoy Presents UN with 5-Point Plan to Combat Global Terrorism
Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations (UN) Gilad Erdan presented a five-point plan for combatting global terrorism to the UN Security Council on Tuesday, calling on members to unite in the global fight against all acts of terrorism.
His plan was presented during a special session convened to mark the 20th anniversary of the adoption of Resolution 1373, a resolution on counter-terrorism passed following the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
The five-point plan presented to the Security Council includes zero tolerance for any act of terrorism; cooperation between countries and technology companies to prevent the incitement and spread of terrorism on social media; designation Hamas, Hezbollah and others as terrorist organizations; acting decisively against countries that support and fund terrorism, such as Iran; and condemning governments and entities that incite terrorism.
“The fight against terrorism is a global struggle,” said Erdan. “To eradicate the scourge of terrorism and restore stability around the world, we must adopt powerful tools and work resolutely together.”
He offered Israel’s “extensive experience in combatting terrorism” which places it in “a valuable position to help the international community better deal with terrorist entities, which requires an uncompromising approach.”
He regretted that the UN is “still a long way from really demonstrating the resolve required in this effort and continues its hypocrisy.”
The plan calls on the UN to adopt a “zero excuses” and “zero tolerance” policy for terrorism.
“Terrorism is terrorism is terrorism, and should never be excused or justified. The UN should serve as a moral compass and embrace this approach with no ambiguity whatsoever. To do otherwise is to politicize and render impotent any meaningful effort to fight terrorism,” the plan says.
The second point calls for “collective action to prevent the spread of terrorism, hatred, and incitement on the internet and social media platforms.”
He noted that UN bodies have reported that “there has been an upswing in online activity, incitement and recruitment by terrorist organizations in 2020.
“There is no doubt this will have long-term implications on global peace and security. We must create public-private global partnerships to curb this disturbing trend. Companies must take responsibility for their role in this and take immediate action to prevent their platforms from becoming breeding grounds for extremism. While freedom of expression is of utmost importance and must be safeguarded, it cannot be used as an excuse to allow incitement and radicalization to continue undisturbed,” the plan states.
The third point calls on the UN to “embrace counterterrorism decisions and strategies that not only address past challenges but also adequately confront current and emerging threats.”
The plan points out that while the Security Council has rightfully imposed sanctions on some of the main perpetrators of terrorism, the Islamic State (ISIS), al-Qaeda, and the Taliban, “it has failed to address the threat imposed by other non-state, major terrorist groups, especially Hamas and Hezbollah.”
“By failing to do so, this institution has turned a blind eye towards groups that terrorize civilians regardless of their nationality or religious affiliation, use innocent victims as human shields and threaten global security,” the plan charges.
The plan further calls on the UN to “take critical and decisive action against States who arm, train and sponsor terrorists and acts of terrorism. It is not enough to sanction merely the terrorist groups themselves.”
“While the Security Council has adopted some important decisions in recent years to prevent the financing and material support of terrorist groups, more must be done. The Iranian Ayatollah regime advances its malign geopolitical goal of regional and political hegemony by supporting its terrorist proxies, wreaking havoc and spreading violence throughout the Middle East and beyond,” the plan says.
Finally, the UN “must cease to embrace States and entities that glorify terrorists and reward acts of terrorism. For example, there should be a clear and unambiguous condemnation of the Palestinian Authority’s “pay to slay” policies.”
“Staying silent as terrorists and their families are rewarded for murderous violence, with higher sums for more violent and bloody acts is no less than complicity. Such policies encourage terrorism and the governments and entities that implement them should be condemned,” the fifth point concludes.
‘Champion of the Jewish People’: Israel Mourns Passing of Philanthropist Sheldon Adelson
Israel’s leadership and multiple organizations in the country and around the world expressed sorrow over the passing of American billionaire and generous philanthropist Sheldon Adelson.
Adelson, 87, passed away on Tuesday from complications connected to the treatment he was receiving for cancer.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that he was “heartbroken” by Adelson’s passing.
“He was a wonderful friend to us personally and an incredible champion of the Jewish people, the Jewish state and the alliance between Israel and America,” he said.
“Sheldon unabashedly loved America and cherished the freedom and opportunity it gave him. He worked tirelessly to ensure that very same freedom and opportunity would be given to others in America and around the world,” he added.
“The warmth of his heart, the clarity of his thinking and the decisiveness of his actions were truly exceptional. From humble beginnings in a suburb of Boston, he rose to be one of the world’s greatest entrepreneurs and philanthropists.”
“With his wife Miri he contributed endlessly to strengthening the Jewish people and the Jewish state, funding breakthroughs in medicine and science and advancing higher education. He gave anonymously to help victims of terror and countless other people in need,” the Israeli premier noted.
One of the last acts of kindness Adelson did was to lend his private airplane to Jonathan Pollard and enable him to fulfill his dream and move to Israel.
President Reuven Rivlin stated he was “saddened” by the passing of Sheldon Adelson, “who loved the Jewish people and Israel, was a great American patriot, and who strengthened the bonds between Israel and America with boundless generosity.”
Jerusalem’s Mayor Moshe Lion stated that the city mourns Adelson’s passing, “a true Zionist whom the spirit of Jerusalem beat within him.”
Adelson “worked with all his might for the city of Jerusalem, its security and future, and made a personal and crucial contribution to the relocation of the American Embassy to Jerusalem and the recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel,” he noted.
“We will always remember his special contribution to the people of Israel in general and to the city of Jerusalem in particular,” he said.
“Sheldon Adelson’s life represents the best of the American dream,” Secretary of State Mike Pompeo stated.
“From his service to his country in the US Army, to his entrepreneurial spirit, to his efforts to strengthen the alliance between Israel and the US, Sheldon’s life was one of great consequence,” Pompeo’s statement read.
“The world, Israel and the US are safer because of his work. His philanthropic giving has impacted the world of medicine, education, and the lives of Jewish-Americans. His political involvement strengthened our democracy,” he added.
