UN Security Council Rejects Netanyahu’s Statement About the Golan

27 April, 2016   |   10 years ago

The United Nations Security Council convened on Tuesday evening and “expressed concern” over Netanyahu’s claims that the Golan Heights are a part of Israel. The Security Council said that the Israeli control of the region is “null and void”, citing a UN resolution adopted in 1981.

This comes in response to Netanyahu’s earlier statements during a cabinet meeting in the Golan, during which he said it would forever remain a part of Israel.

Israel’s Foreign Ministry responded to the Security Council’s statement on Wednesday morning, saying it “ignores the reality in Syria.”

“Who is Israel supposed to hold negotiations with on the future of the Golan, Da’esh (Islamic State)? Al Qaeda? Hezbollah? The Iranian and Syrian forces who slaughtered hundreds of thousands of people? In light of the war raging in Syria and the stability and the security that Israel has established in the Golan for the last 50 or so years, the suggestion that Israel go down from the Golan is not reasonable.”
