Israel’s Interior Minister Aryeh Deri has made a first comment on the recent publications of a probe into suspected crimes he has committed.

“I was surprised, but I am working as normal at the moment,” said Deri at a conference at the Ramada Hotel in Jerusalem. “I hope the probe is sped up so we can continue working without disruption.”

It was cleared for publication overnight that a probe had been initiated into Deri’s conduct, but no more details are available yet. Deri has already served three years in prison between the years 2000-2002 following a corruption conviction for bribery while he served as Interior Minister.

The Arabic-language Twitter account of Hamas’ military wing, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, was abruptly suspended on Monday, March 28, according to a statement posted on the Palestinian terror group’s website. Their official English-language account was closed two weeks earlier, on March 15.

Twitter acted following “pressure exerted by Zionist groups,” according to the former manager of the al-Qassam account, as quoted in the Arabic statement. (The statement posted on the English website omits that accusation.)

The now-defunct Twitter account had over 140,000 followers, the statement said. A new account opened by the group already has 45,000 followers.

Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades is the military wing of Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip, and is considered a terrorist organization by Israel, the United States and the European Union.

On Sunday, March 27, the group’s official Hebrew-language Twitter page celebrated the 14th anniversary of the Passover massacre, in which a Palestinian suicide bomber killed 30 Israelis and injured dozens more as they sat down for the Seder in Netanya’s Park Hotel. Hamas claimed responsibility for the terror attack.

Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon spoke out on Monday, March 28 against politicians backing the soldier who was caught on video shooting to death an already-subdued Palestinian attacker in Hebron last week.

“He’s a soldier gone astray,” Ya’alon said in the Knesset during the course of a no-confidence vote. “Whoever acts appropriately gets full backing, but if someone went astray they must face judgment.”

Ya’alon emphasized that the officers present submitted a report of the incident and an investigation into the shooting was launched well before the video footage emerged on Thursday, March 24.

The shooting “violated the law and our moral values,” Ya’alon said, adding that such an extreme case may well rise to the “criminal level.”

National Security Council Upgrades Warning for Israelis on Visiting Turkey

28 March, 2016   |   8 years ago

Israel’s National Security Council Counter-Terrorism Bureau (NSCCTB) has upgraded its warning for traveling to and through Turkey, from the level of a basic concrete threat to a high concrete threat.

“The deadly 19 March 2016 attack in Istanbul, in which a group of Israeli tourists was hit, underscores the threat by ISIS against tourist targets throughout Turkey and proves high capabilities of carrying out further attacks,” the NSCCTP said in a statement. “Terrorist infrastructures in Turkey continue to advance additional attacks against tourist targets, including Israeli tourists, throughout the country.”

In that vein, the NSCCTB is recommending that Israelis not visit Turkey and that Israeli tourists currently in Turkey, leave the country as soon as possible.
